John Fox is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where he was previously the Senator William McMaster Professor of Social Statistics. Professor Fox received a PhD in Sociology from the University of Michigan in 1972. He is the author of many articles and books on statistics, including, recently, Applied Regression Analysis and Generalized Linear Models, Third Edition (Sage, 2016), Using the R Commander: A Point-and-Click Interface for R (Chapman & Hall, 2018), Regression Diagnostics, Second Edition (Sage, 2019), A Mathematical Primer for Social Statistics, Second Edition (Sage, 2021), and, with Sanford Weisberg, An R Companion to Applied Regression, Third Edition (Sage, 2019). He continues to work on the development of statistical methods and their implementation in software. Professor Fox is an elected member of the R Foundation for Statistical Computing and an associate editor of the Journal of Statistical Software.

SORA-TABA WORKSHOP and BIOSTATISTICS RESEARCH DAY 2020
DLSPH Biostatistics Research Day 2020
This year the Biostatistics Research Day poster presentations, which would ordinarily have taken place in-person at the 2020 SORA/TABA Annual Workshop & DLSPH Biostatistics Research Day on May 22nd, will be hosted online over three sessions during the week of June 15th.
The virtual poster presentation sessions will be held on:
- Wednesday, June 17th: 10-11:30am
- Thursday, June 18th: 10-11:30am
- Thursday, June 18th: 3-4:30pm
Theme: “Statistical Machine Learning for Biomedical Data”
Date: August 20-21, 2020
Time: 11am-5:30pm (EDT)
Registration: Link
Dr. Noah Simon from the University of Washington will present a 1-day intensive workshop. You’ll learn about how traditional statistical methods like logistic regression can be used for high dimensional data (data with many variables) and then move onto machine learning methods such as random forests, support vector machines, (gradient) boosting using trees and neural networks. New machine learning methods will be related to more classical statistical approaches – all designed for an audience with familiarity with statistical approaches and discussed in the context of biomedical big data and predictive modeling.
SORA-TABA WORKSHOP and BIOSTATISTICS RESEARCH DAY 2019
Theme: “Regression Modeling Strategies”
The Division of Biostatistics at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health is pleased to host the SORA-TABA Workshop & DLSPH Biostatistics Research Day. The event brings together regional and local statistical communities who are interested in biostatistics, financial statistics and other applied areas of statistics. In addition to the lecture presentation by Dr. Frank E. Harrell Jr., the workshop will include poster presentations by participants; students and post-docs are particularly encouraged to present their research or practicum work, and three poster awards will be given at the closing ceremony. There will also be career advice mentors in attendance who will be available to provide career-building advice, especially for graduate students.

SORA-TABA WORKSHOP and BIOSTATISTICS RESEARCH DAY 2017
Theme: “Data Visualization”
This workshop is co-hosted by the Research Institute of the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) with focus on data visualization. With increasing volumes of raw data being collected in, for example, health care and business analytics contexts, new graphical approaches are needed to generate hypotheses and extract actionable information. The workshop features four speakers, bringing together an electric mix of academic and professional expertise on the topic.
